Airport Types
Towered vs. Non-Towered Airports
Airports fall into two broad categories: towered (with an operating control tower) and non-towered (no tower or tower closed). Each type has different communication and operational expectations. Drone pilots need to understand both, especially when operating nearby.
| Characteristic | Towered | Non-Towered |
|---|---|---|
| ATC services | Full ATC instructions and clearances | None — pilots self-announce |
| Frequencies | Tower, ground, clearance delivery | CTAF (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency) |
| Drone authorization | Required if in Class B, C, or D airspace | Not required if in Class G |
| Pilot communication | Required two-way radio for manned aircraft | Self-announce position and intentions |
| Sectional symbol | Blue | Magenta |
Drone pilot rule
You can operate near a non-towered airport without authorization IF you are in Class G. But you still must yield right of way to all manned aircraft.
